Once called “The Secret City”, Los Alamos was created during the second world war as the site for a classified research laboratory for the Manhattan Project’s development of the atomic bomb. Today, Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) is one of the largest science and technology institutions in the world with an annual budget of almost 4 billion (FY22) and a total workforce of 14,000.
Located in the beautiful high desert of northern New Mexico (elevation 7,320 ft), Los Alamos has all of nature as a playground with more than 150 developed trails connecting the local canyons and mesas perfect for walking, running, hiking, and biking. Our very own Pajarito Ski Hill is only 15 minutes from town and offers some great skiing/snowboarding and hosts year-round events.
Venture a little further to see the spectacular Valles Caldera National Preserve a 13-mile-wide crater formed from a super volcano as well as Bandelier National Monument the site of ancient pueblo dwellings. The New Mexico State Capitol, Santa Fe, is only 35 miles away and offers a wide variety of activities, food, museums and events.
Spending the day in town can include visits to the local History Museum, Fuller Lodge Art Center, and the popular Bradbury Science Museum that draws in nearly 80,000 visitors each year.
Downtown you will find galleries, souvenirs, and a nice variety of locally owned bars and restaurants including the Blue Window Bistro, Pajarito Brewpub and Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op. For other local activities you can visit the Los Alamos Golf Course, Aquatic Center, Tennis Courts, and Ice-Skating Rink.
During the summer months enjoy free outdoor concerts at Ashley Pond each Friday night. Other local events include a weekly Farmer’s market, an annual Science Festival, Fair & Rodeo, Halloweekend, Holiday Lights Parade and several Art Fairs.
